MPCore.us – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday (6/11) that US sanctions against Iran were illegitimate, in Russia’s first official comments since the US imposed sanctions on Iran.

Lavrov said Russia hoped there would be a way to continue economic cooperation with Iran, although US sanctions against Iran were re-imposed on Monday (5/11) in the country’s oil, banking and transportation sectors.

Speaking in Madrid, Lavrov said the United States had used an “unacceptable way” to pressure the SWIFT global financial network operator to terminate employment with Iranian banks.

Russia and its European partners are looking for ways to maintain economic relations with Iran, he said after meeting with his Spanish counterpart Josep Borrell, but gave no details.

Iran said on Tuesday that so far Iran could sell as much oil as it wanted, despite pressure from the US, but urged European countries that opposed the sanctions to do more to protect Iran.
